My first IVU trip came at a time in my life when I was really feeling the grind. I was offered the opportunity to participate in the IVU Women’s Program in Jos, Nigeria focusing on women with vesicovaginal fistulas. This trip changed the trajectory of my career and how I view and practice medicine. Although the conditions in which these women were living were somewhat desperate, I was overwhelmed by their warmth, their smiles, and their genuine happiness. This experience with IVU not only made me re-evaluate how I practice medicine, it also allowed me to find the joy of being a physician again.
