IVUmed was featured in the JU Forum section of the February 2022 issue of the Journal of Urology.  Our article “Re-Imagining a Global Surgical Organization: A View during and beyond the Pandemic”  written by IVUmed Board Members Christina Ching, MD, Francis Schneck, MD, and IVUmed Executive Director Danielle Sweeney, MD,  highlights the challenges and successes we have had during the COVID-19 pandemic.  The impact of losing 2 years of in-person global surgical missions is immeasurable, however, the pandemic has also given IVUmed the opportunity to reassess our organizational mission and goals.  The development and expansion of our virtual programming have led to continued and in some cases increased engagement with our global partners, ensuring a sustainable impact during this time of global isolation.

Through our virtual education and training platform, IVUmed has given over 88 Virtual Visiting Professor Lectures on all topics in urology to over 1700 participants since March 2020.  We have established Global Research Mentorship Partnerships in Uganda, St. Lucia and Zimbabwe, and Ethiopia, and engaged with new program sites in Burundi, Ethiopia, and Somalia.

Moving forward, IVUmed’s program of work will contain a mixture of both in-person and virtual learning experiences, as they complement each other well. We plan to resume our in-person surgical workshops in 2022 and will continue to enhance this with our virtual education and training platform.
