As a pediatric anesthesiologist in the US, I am used to doing my job with certain tools and amenities, with the end goal of keeping patients safe. It really hit home the lack of resources and the extreme poverty that occurs in many of the IVU host countries. While it gave me pause, it also gave me hope that there are organizations like IVU who are determined not to let these vulnerable children fall through the cracks. It really is up to all of us to do what we can – volunteer time and expertise, donate equipment or medications, contribute financially – to really make a difference in these parts of the world. One child at a time is all it takes.
