Dr. Josephine Hidalgo-Tamola's IVUmed Trip to Bangladesh
Dear Friends and Family,
In 2008, I had the privilege of traveling with International Volunteers in Urology (IVUmed) to Bangladesh and India. IVUmed is a non-profit organization that provides surgical education to physicians and nurses and treatment to patients suffering from urological problems in low income countries. Urology is a surgical subspecialty that treats diseases related to the kidneys, bladder or genitalia.
During our trip we were able to provide free surgical care for patients with urological problems. We treated common problems such as urethral strictures (severe narrowing of the urethra) and complex diseases such as birth defects of the bladder and genitalia. Many of our patients suffered for years before receiving care because of lack of money and resources. Also, a shortage of trained urologists in the country led to delays in treatment or inability of patients to find a surgeon that can operate on them.
I will be participating in another IVUmed trip to Bangladesh this October. I ask for your help in making this trip successful. Donations, payable to IVUmed, are tax deductible and will help provide supplies and surgical care to people who desperately need it. Thanks again for your support and please don’t feel like you have to donate if you are under any financial strain.
Thank you,
Dr. Josephine Hidalgo-Tamola
